The rural mining communities of the North East in particular were hives of creativity. Miners and their families manufactured practical items for their homes, but embellished them beyond mere functionality to ensure they were items they would also enjoy. Museums across the region contain many examples of this ‘folk-art’ made by people who had no pretension to artistry, but who were nevertheless, as seen by the examples presented here, possessed of a great deal of skill and talent.
