Since the 7th century the region has been noted for its ability to produce items of fine art and sculpture. These include the beautiful illuminated pages of the Lindisfarne Gospels and leading examples of Anglo-Saxon sculpture. In the 19th century numerous significant artists were born, trained or worked here, such as the internationally important painter John Martin. More recently art has been the focus for cultural development in the region, epitomised by the Angel of the North, ensuring the North East has become a leading place for great public art.
