The North East is of course the place in which the first History of England was written, by Bede, in the 7th century. It is also the only English region to have its own musical instrument, the Northumbrian small pipes. Indeed music has a strong place in the North East, not least in the mining communities and their great traditions of brass band music continued to the present day. The literary tradition is also strong, and the manuscripts and equipment of several significant authors are on view in museums and archives across the region. We are also an important region for publishing, with several significant publishing concerns in the North East, and publishing innovations such as the Davison Bible, and of course the magazine phenomenon that is Viz!
