Background

Perhaps the greatest innovation to come out of the North East is the passenger railway, which grew out of the needs of the colliery owners to move large amounts of coal quickly to rivers for onward transport in a region where canal building, due to local topography, never took off. North East engineers ruled the railway world in the early 19th century, so our region can claim to have completely revolutionised the planet, reducing travel times and making the world a far smaller place, all because of the innovation and creativity of the North East.
