When one thinks of the North East of the 20th century one tends to think of heavy industry – especially mining and shipbuilding. There were of course other significant manufacturers, chief among them were the Armstrong - later Vickers - armaments factories at Elswick and Scotswood on the Tyne, which produced many innovations in weaponry, and the steel plants of Consett and Teesside. Today Nissan represents a continued commitment to large scale industrial manufacture, being the largest car plant in the UK.
