For some people the North East is today synonymous with shopping – think Eldon Square, Metrocentre or any of the other myriad of retail estates that have sprung up over the years. It is certainly an important element of the life of the region. With this in mind it is perhaps no surprise to learn that the region has been an innovator in this area too, with the first department store (Bainbridge’s) opening in the mid 19th century, and making important contributions to the development of the Co-operative Society stores as well.
