The North East has always been a crucible of creativity, and for a small, sparsely populated area it would seem to have had far more than its fair share of UK and world firsts and inventions, from railways to the electric light bulb! Of course the development of new industrial processes fed into this, but so too did an incredible intellectual flourishing in the region which saw, for example, the creation of a number of learned societies, including the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle – the first such society to be created outside London. The objects here represent an incredible variety of inventions and firsts that together tell a tale of the astounding contribution of our region to the world.
