The North East has long been a region for great engineering. Its primary claim in this lies in its being the birthplace of the passenger railway which saw great leaps forward in engineering, from the development of locomotive engines themselves to innovations in bridge technology. The steam turbine was successfully applied to both electricity generation and ship propulsion here, and it is often forgotten that the North East created the UK’s first effective electricity supply grid. These developments made possible the reliable and affordable electricity on which our lifestyle depends.
