Traditionally, when one thinks of the North East one thinks of heavy manufacturing Industry, from coal mining to shipbuilding to steel manufacture. In many ways these industries formed the backbone of the region in the 19th and 20th centuries. Within them there was great craft and innovation, as shown by the objects selected here, and they underpinned the structure and style of society in the North East in that time as well. But the region was also home to industries that drew on artistic innovation, for instance in the manufacture of glass and ceramics. This innovation is continuing today with new industries in the region contributing key ideas on a global stage.
