From the time that Bede began to write the first English history, the North East has been a place of artistic creativity; from creating its own distinctive musical instrument, the Northumbrian pipes, to world-famous writers and artworks such as the Angel of the North. Our selection includes both works by recognised artists and examples of the creativity of ordinary working people. The objects range from paintings and decorative items to practical items for use around the home. Creativity clearly oozes through every aspect of our society and it is therefore perhaps no surprise that the North East has the largest collection of public art of any English region.
