David Almond is a hugely successful and critically-acclaimed author of books for children, who draws heavily on his North East identity in his work.
Almond’s use of description and language in My Dad’s a Birdman (Walker Books, 2007) perfectly capture the North East setting of the story, and these manuscript notes give a powerful insight into his creative process. His untidy scribbling records key words and phrases which inspired the story, and show him getting inside the head of his characters.
David Almond has received numerous awards for his work, and his contribution to the international field of children’s literature was recognised when he was awarded the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2010.
